The debt of the municipalities and municipal associations in North Rhine-Westphalia was around 61 billion euros at the end of 2022. That was 1.2 percent more than twelve months earlier, as the State Statistical Office IT.NRW announced on Wednesday. According to the statisticians, the calculated per capita debt of the citizens rose from 3367 to 3373 euros.

The lion’s share of the debt – around 47.6 billion euros – was accounted for by the core budgets of the municipalities. In addition, there were a further 13.3 billion euros from debts of the municipal companies, the facilities similar to those owned by the companies themselves and the municipal institutions under public law.

If one only takes into account the debt of the core budgets of the municipalities, the per capita debt was 2636 euros purely arithmetically. But there were big regional differences. Per capita debt was highest in Oberhausen, at EUR 9,336.23. Mülheim an der Ruhr followed closely with 9107 euros. Per capita debt was also above average in Bonn (EUR 6,077.33), Remscheid (EUR 5,917.84) and Essen (EUR 5,225.51).

Nationwide, the lowest values ​​were found for the districts of Gütersloh (589.71 euros), Coesfeld (634.65 euros) and Olpe (683.29 euros), the city of Düsseldorf (687.18 euros) and the district of Warendorf (687.67 Euro).
