FRANKFURT (Germany) — Police Saturday said that a fifth victim was found under a train which had been stalled in southern Germany’s Alps.
After initial attempts to lift the carriages that were stalled, the man’s body was found. Recovery workers had to wait for a heavy crane to be brought to the site near the resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Investigators are currently investigating the cause of the derailment.
Around 140 people were aboard the train, including students returning from Whitsun school. According to police in the southern Bavaria, 44 people were hurt.
After pulling out of Burgrain, the regional train heading for Munich was seen to have veered off the tracks. The double-deck carriages were at least partially overturned and passengers were pulled from the windows to safety.
