He assures that one part of the Executive “questions the head of State” and the other is “omitting the defense” of it
MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has been in favor of the king emeritus “being able to return to his country” and has stressed that he has “no pending cases”, for which he has “every right to visit Spain”. That said, he has accused the Executive of the PSOE and United We Can of “eroding” the head of state again with this trip by Don Juan Carlos.
This is how Feijóo has spoken from Ceuta before the visit that Don Juan Carlos I plans to make to the municipality of Sanxenxo (Pontevedra) this weekend and that would be his first visit to Spain almost two years after his departure to Abu Dhabi.
This same Tuesday, the mayor of Sanxenxo (Pontevedra), Telmo Martín, has confirmed the presence of the king emeritus in this tourist town and has even suggested that the visit could begin on Friday itself, since that day the 3rd regatta of the IV Cup Spain 2022 Class 6m.
As he has done other times, Feijóo has defended that the emeritus king can return to Spain. “I am absolutely in favor of the king emeritus, if he deems it appropriate, to be able to return to his country. As far as I know, he has no pending case in our country, he is a Spanish citizen and maintains his passport as a European citizen and, therefore, Spanish,” has emphasized.
Having said this, he has criticized the fact that now there is an attempt to “again erode the head of state” through the king emeritus. In his opinion, it is “something that the Spanish do not deserve” and “much less that is encouraged by the Government.”
“It is the first time that we have a government in Spain that is fracturing the head of government and I think that is a serious mistake. It is a very serious mistake that one part of the government is questioning the head of state and that the other part of the government is , in some way, omitting the defense of the head of state”, he has proclaimed.
In this sense, the head of the opposition has reiterated that Juan Carlos I “has no pending cases” in Spain and has added that “he has every right to visit or return to Spain” in accordance with his “personal decision”.
Feijóo has made these statements after meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and the Confederation of Entrepreneurs of the autonomous city together with the regional president, Juan Jesús Vivas. He will also hold a meeting with union representatives of the State Security Forces and Bodies and also plans to chair the Board of Directors of the PP of Ceuta.
In his statement to the media, Feijóo has expressed the PP’s “commitment” to “the Spanish and secular Ceuta”, as well as to all the citizens of the autonomous city. “My presence here today is a message of the Spanishness of Ceuta and Melilla and, therefore, of the integrity of the Spanish nation”, he has proclaimed.
