The rule of law must draw conclusions from this, the minister said. “We must clearly show those who refuse to integrate violence in our cities the limits: with a firm hand and clear language – but without stirring up racist resentment.”

Faeser called for the perpetrators from New Year’s Eve to be punished quickly and severely. “The police have to go very consistently into hot spots,” she said. “Young violent offenders must face quick and clear criminal consequences. The punishment must be immediate. That creates respect for our rule of law.”

The state shouldn’t allow young violent criminals to terrorize their neighborhoods, said Faeser. “The whole neighborhood suffers from them, especially many people with a migration background – among them there is zero understanding for violence and riots,” she said. “We have a duty to protect them.”
