The agreement on the delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar is also being criticized in Germany. The German Environmental Aid considers the contract to be wrong on two counts: “The gas deal with LNG delivery from 2026 does not help in the current crisis, but with its 15-year term it creates a new long-term dependency,” complained Federal Managing Director Sascha Müller -Kraenner in Berlin. The supply agreement points in the wrong direction and is above all a risk for the climate goals.
Likewise, the Left Party’s deputy leader, Lorenz Gösta Beutin, argued: “Gas supplies from 2026 are ineffective for the current energy crisis, but create long-term energy dependency until 2041 with a country that tramples on human rights and is involved in the bloody war against Yemen.” With the effort with which the federal government is currently expanding fossil fuel infrastructure, it is blocking itself and subsequent governments from any chance of stopping the climate crisis in time.
From the point of view of the FDP, the agreement concluded on Tuesday makes it clear “how dependent we are on states that do not share our values”. It is therefore important to strengthen energy sovereignty by having Germany produce its own gas. “Germany should also promote shale gas production on land in order to make itself more independent,” demanded the FDP energy politician Michael Kruse on “t-online”.
