The three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany should be kept in reserve, according to Lower Saxony’s FDP state chairman Konstantin Kuhle. “It is not clear why the arguments that justified continued operation last winter should suddenly no longer apply next winter,” said Kuhle on Wednesday when asked by the dpa.
It would therefore be correct to hold the three remaining investments as a reserve. In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and climate change, the final phase-out of nuclear energy is generally untimely.
On Saturday, the three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany – Isar 2 in Bavaria, Emsland in Lower Saxony and Neckarwestheim 2 in Baden-Württemberg – are to go off the grid for good. This was actually supposed to happen at the end of last year. However, because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the resulting energy crisis, the traffic light coalition decided last year to let the reactors continue to run over the winter.
