It’s crucial for communities to voice their concerns and priorities through voting, especially with Election Day just around the corner. On Nov. 5, Americans will have the opportunity to elect the next US president and decide on representatives at various levels of government. In California alone, there were 10 propositions on the ballot, which can be overwhelming for many voters, whether they are new to the process or seasoned participants.

To help voters navigate this important decision-making process, India Currents partnered with CalMatters to organize a “Voter Information Night” event at Shosha in Sunnyvale on Oct. 25, 2024. The event featured trivia, prizes, food, drinks, and chai, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for attendees. Dan Hu, the partnership manager at CalMatters, shared insights on statewide propositions through short video clips titled “Props in a Minute.” These informative videos introduced each measure and sparked discussions among guests.

Additionally, the India Currents team presented the India Currents’ voter guide and the “Bay Area Desis on the Ballot” catalog. The Voter Guide offers essential information on voter registration, casting ballots, key deadlines, and important dates. On the other hand, the Desis on the Ballot catalog highlights over 20 Indian American candidates running for office in the San Francisco Bay Area, available in English, Hindi, Telugu, and Punjabi as a downloadable PDF.

During the event, attendees had the opportunity to engage with the material presented, ask questions, and review the voter guide and propositions. The interactive nature of the event allowed participants to deepen their understanding of the issues at stake and make informed decisions when they head to the polls.

It was heartening to see attendees like Manoj Jha, Kanan Khokhani, and Geetha Narayanan actively participating in the event, reviewing the voter guide, and discussing Proposition 32. The event also provided an opportunity for attendees to pick up postcards and stickers as they left, serving as a reminder of the importance of exercising their right to vote.

Overall, the “Voter Information Night” event was a great success in empowering voters with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions at the upcoming elections. By collaborating with organizations like CalMatters, India Currents continues to play a vital role in promoting civic engagement and encouraging active participation in the democratic process. As we approach Election Day, let’s remember the significance of our voices and the impact they can have on shaping our communities and society as a whole.
