More than half of the women in Schleswig-Holstein who pay social security contributions work part-time. According to the regional directorate of the employment agency, the part-time quota was 53.8 percent in 2022. 268,900 women worked part-time, 231,200 women full-time (46.2 percent). In comparison, the part-time rate for men was only 14.2 percent.
“An important potential in the context of securing skilled workers are the women who are currently employed part-time,” said the head of the regional directorate, Markus Biercher, of the German Press Agency. Many would like to increase their working hours – if the general conditions change, for example in childcare or when caring for family members.
“It is gratifying that in Schleswig-Holstein the employment rate for women has risen steadily in recent years,” said Biercher. In 2022, it was 58.7 percent for women and 62.8 percent for men. In 2021, the employment rate was 57.5 percent for women and 61.6 percent for men. In 2017 it was still 54.5 percent (women) and 58.3 percent (men).
Also striking: 68.4 percent of women in jobs subject to social security contributions have a recognized professional qualification, 14.4 percent have an academic degree, as Biercher said. In comparison, only 63.4 percent of men had a recognized professional qualification and 13.4 percent an academic degree.
