Six people died in an avalanche in the French Alps. This was confirmed by a spokesman for the gendarmerie squad for the high mountains in Chamonix. The victims were on a ski tour. According to French media, two guides and four of their clients died. Channel France Bleu reported that they were in their mid-twenties to late forties and lived in different French cities.
The avalanche fell on Sunday afternoon on the Armancette glacier near Mont Blanc on the French-Italian border, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. The Mont Blanc (also written Mont Blanc, Italian Monte Bianco, in German “White Mountain”) is the highest mountain in the Alps. Darmanin thanked the rescue workers. He commemorates the victims and their families. French President Emmanuel Macron also commemorated the victims and their families.
Another person was slightly injured in the accident. Eight people escaped unharmed, the France Info station reported, citing the local prefecture. There was no avalanche warning, but it quickly got warmer over the Easter weekend. Investigations should clarify how exactly the avalanche came about.
