The state chairmen of the left, Susanne Schaper and Stefan Hartmann, want to be their party’s top candidates for the state elections next year. A spokesman for the left informed that they had declared their willingness to do so at the meeting of the state executive committee on Friday evening. However, other applicants can still throw their hats in the ring until August 21st. Then it would come to a member’s decision. Otherwise, a state party conference in November would decide on the top candidates. The board had decided that the party would go into the state elections with two people as top candidates, it said.
In Saxony, a new state parliament will be elected in 2024. In the 2019 election, the left was the third strongest behind the CDU and AfD with 10.4 percent. The party already has an eye on the election campaign. The work on the election program has been going on for several months, it said.
