It’s been ten years since the last game in the series was released: with 190 million copies, GTA V is the best-selling game of all time after Minecraft. It goes without saying that developer Rockstar created a huge hype with the announcement of a trailer for GTA VI. Today the introduction clip was finally released. In the end it becomes clear: the next part of Grand Theft Auto is scheduled to appear in 2025. But there are also a lot of hints about where the journey will go.
The biggest change is Lucia. The tough Latina is the first female main character in the series. Although there were female gangsters in earlier parts, you couldn’t control them. Together with her lover, named Jason according to leaks, she steals through the trailer in the style of Bonnie and Clyde. If you believe the leaks, you can decide which of the two characters you accompany through the shared story – just like it was in the last part with the three male main characters.
Fans of the series will immediately recognize the setting: Vice City, a fictional version of the US metropolis Miami, was the setting for the series part of the same name from 2002. With lots of neon, people shot, stole and murdered their way through cocaine-infested Miami to synth sounds the eighties. “Miami Vice” from the gangsters’ point of view, so to speak. Rockstar now seems to want to repeat this vibe, but with a modern twist: The neon color palette and matching music also appear in the trailer, but otherwise the new part clearly seems to be set in the current times.
This is indicated by a type of social media app that can be seen again and again and is reminiscent of a mixture of Twitter/X and Tiktok. The content there fits the rest of the vibe: a man pulls a crocodile out of the pool, a woman twerks on the roof of a moving car. With parties, racing boats and of course lots of gangster antics, countless possible activities are hinted at in the game.
The locations shown are also extremely varied. From the famous wide sand beach in Miami Beach to the high-rises of the city center to the Hood, the metropolis alone has a lot to offer. But unlike in the 2002 game, Rockstar now seems to have expanded the surrounding area extensively. The trailer shows the lush green islands of the Florida Keys and the swampy expanse of the Everglades. And even a hillbilly festival where people drink in the mud in front of monster trucks.
The movement in the game is correspondingly diverse: Of course, the Ferraris based on the “Miami Vice” model should not be missing, vintage cars and lowriders are of course part of a GTA. Of course, the fact that you can travel through the Everglades in style with a propeller-driven airboat is a novelty. Helicopters, various boats, motorcycles and tons of other cars can also be seen in the trailer.
However, the trailer doesn’t even address one of the most important questions for many fans: multiplayer doesn’t appear in the clip at all. However, it can be expected that Rockstar will put a lot of effort into this point: even more than ten years after its release, the multiplayer mode brings hundreds of millions of euros into the developer’s coffers every year. This cash cow is unlikely to simply be allowed to come to a standstill.
