MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Irish Foreign Minister, Simon Coveney, has “deeply regretted” London’s announcement that it will unilaterally revoke some of the commitments of the Northern Ireland Protocol, included in the Brexit agreement, and has warned that it will only complicate the resolution of the current disputes.

Coveney has spoken shortly after her British counterpart, Liz Truss, announced before the British House of Commons that “in the coming weeks” her Government will legislate to break the aforementioned Protocol, by virtue of which Northern Ireland remains within the single market to avoid a ‘hard border’ in Ulster.

For Coveney, the measure anticipated by Truss and that puts “a binding international agreement” in check undermines confidence in the United Kingdom authorities and “will only serve to further complicate the search for solutions to the legitimate complaints of the Northern Irish population about the in practice of the Protocol”, according to the public channel RTE.

The Irish minister had already expressed himself on other occasions against any unilateral measure by London — last week he did so during a visit to Spain. Also the vice president of the European Commission in charge of supervising relations with the United Kingdom, Maros Sefcovic, has warned this Tuesday that the European Union will respond with “all the measures at its disposal” if the Government of Boris Johnson fulfills its threat.
