At least 50 people have died in Pakistan since the monsoon rains began in late June. This was confirmed by the national disaster agency in the country of the German press agency on Friday. According to the authority, most of the deaths are in Punjab province, which is also the country’s most populous province. In the past two days, the provincial capital Lahore has even experienced the heaviest rainfall in decades.
Most of the deaths were caused by houses collapsing under the water masses. The rains also caused landslides in the northern province of Khyper Pakhtunkhwa, killing eight children, the agency said.
In Pakistan, the annual monsoon repeatedly leads to deaths. Last summer, the South Asian country experienced record floods, which according to official figures killed more than 1,700 people and temporarily left a third of the country under water.
