FC Bayern failed spectacularly in the second round of the DFB Cup, while Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen made it to the round of 16.
After conceding a goal by Marcel Gaus in the sixth minute of stoppage time, the Munich team lost 1:2 (1:1) to third division soccer team 1. FC Saarbrücken. Leverkusen, on the other hand, struggled to a late 5:2 (1:0) at SV Sandhausen, BVB confidently won 1:0 (1:0) against TSG Hoffenheim.
For two other Bundesliga competitors, the cup is also over after the second round. Freiburg experienced a home debacle against second division team SC Paderborn and lost 1:3 (0:2). Mainz, who were also struggling in the league, lost 0-3 (0-1) to relegated Hertha BSC. In addition to the Berliners, Eintracht Frankfurt is also in the round of 16 after winning 2-0 (1-0) at Viktoria Cologne. In addition, second division team 1. FC Nürnberg won 3:2 (2:2, 0:0) after extra time against league rivals Hansa Rostock. 1. FC Magdeburg also made it into the next round after a 4:3 (3:3, 2:2, 2:0) penalty shootout at Holstein Kiel.
Bayern loses in the last minute
But the biggest sensation was in Saarbrücken. Thomas Müller (16th minute) initially gave Bayern the lead, as befits their status. But then defender Matthijs de Ligt was injured, which caused a break in the Munich game. Patrick Sontheimer (45.1) equalized for the big outsiders before the break. In literally the last minute, Gaus scored the celebrated winning goal for the hosts.
BVB, which welcomes the ailing Bayern to the top Bundesliga game on Saturday, acted much more confidently. Marco Reus (43rd minute) scored the winning goal against Hoffenheim before the break.
Leverkusen with more effort than expected
Bundesliga table leaders Leverkusen also got off to a confident start and took the lead thanks to a converted penalty kick by Exequiel Palacios (21st). After the break things got wild. Christoph Ehlich (50′) initially equalized for the hosts, four minutes later Jonathan Tah (54′) put Bayer back in front. Just three minutes later, Yassin Ben Balla (57th) equalized again for SVS. Sandhausen then became stronger and even pushed for the lead – but Bayer still prevailed in the end. Adam Hlozek (85th) and Amine Adli (88th/90th 2) made everything clear.
Freiburg and Mainz, on the other hand, are out. Fabian Reese (45.3/foul penalty) and Haris Tabakovic (50./hand penalty/61.) caused celebrations for Hertha in Berlin and a debacle for Mainz. Freiburg had previously been eliminated by Paderborn, who prevailed thanks to goals from Florent Muslija (18th/33rd) and Filip Bilbija (56th). Maximilian Eggestein (70th) at least managed to score the next goal for weak Freiburg, whose rebellion came too late in the final phase.
Frankfurt, on the other hand, came just ahead. Ellyes Skhiri (14th) initially gave third division team Viktoria the lead. Ansgar Knauff only made everything clear late (90th).
