Under the motto “Kidical Mass”, cyclists and traffic initiatives in Berlin have planned 14 children’s bicycle demos on Saturday and Sunday. The organizers from the General German Bicycle Club Berlin (ADFC), the Changing Cities initiative and the Verkehrsclub Deutschland Nordost demand safe cycle paths and school routes for children, according to a press release.

On both days, the initiatives expect a total of around 2,500 participants, as ADFC spokesman Karl Grünberg announced. Among them are “children with their parents, friends, siblings and maybe some grandparents.” The first cycle route started on Saturday morning in Reinickendorf at the elementary school on the Peckwisch and led via the Charlie Chaplin School and the Reinickendorf town hall to the cherry blossom square.

Further tours were planned in Berlin-Mitte, Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Pankow, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg. On Sunday, the cyclists want to drive from four different points to the youth traffic school on Sachsendamm and then on to Tempelhofer Feld, “probably with 1,000 people”.

“We are demanding the same from the new Berlin Senate as from the old one: More safe cycle paths, also separated from car traffic, and more bicycle parking spaces,” emphasized Grünberg. Since the introduction of the Berlin Mobility Act in 2018, some things have improved for cyclists, “but not enough”. Kidical Mass wants to bring more than 400 children’s demonstrations to the streets across Germany on both days, including in Munich, Hamburg and Cologne.
