After the Sunday of the Dead, a number of large Christmas markets heralded the pre-Christmas period in many places. For example, stalls opened in Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt on Monday. After two years with Corona-related restrictions, many stallholders and showmen are now looking forward to hustle and bustle and good sales. But even in this winter time, sellers and consumers have to accept the special circumstances – because of the energy crisis, the ice rinks were not put into operation in some places.

Traditionally, Christmas markets in German-speaking countries usually open after Totensonntag. In addition to the large Christmas market in Duisburg, which started on November 10th, some smaller markets had started the stall season much earlier. In addition, there is an overall trend to no longer necessarily close the markets before Christmas Eve, but to keep them open between the years or even into January.
