After the rampage at an elementary school in the US city of Nashville, First Lady Jill Biden visited the site of the attack. US President Joe Biden’s wife traveled yesterday to the school in the state of Tennessee where three children and three adults were killed in a gun attack on Monday.

Jill Biden looked at an improvised memorial with large photos of those killed. She touched the pictures and paused. She later wanted to take part in a vigil for the victims, which included the singer Sheryl Crow.

Great consternation in the USA

According to police, the shooter in the killing spree was a 28-year-old Nashville woman who used to attend school. According to investigators, she self-identified as transgender. This is the name given to people who do not – or not only – identify with the sex that was documented at their birth. However, the police made conflicting statements about the gender of the perpetrator, which caused public confusion. The exact background of the act initially remained unclear.

The act caused great dismay in the United States and once again fueled a debate about possible reforms to gun laws. The United States has long faced tremendous levels of gun violence. Rampages and shootings are part of everyday life there.
