After the attack on two schoolgirls in Berlin-Neukölln, a 39-year-old man was arrested as the alleged perpetrator. He is said to have seriously injured the seven and eight-year-old girls in a schoolyard with a knife, a police spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said it was still being determined whether he knew the girls. The newspaper “B.Z.” reported the suspect was said to have had no relation to his victims. A girl is said to have life-threatening injuries. Both are being treated in hospital. According to the Senate Department for Education, the suspect had no accomplices. “At the moment we are assuming that it is a lone perpetrator,” said a spokeswoman for Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU) after visiting the crime scene. It is not assumed that the crime was politically or religiously motivated.
