On Tuesday morning, the Berlin federal police, together with the Brandenburg police, carried out several raids against a gang of smugglers. A police spokeswoman said three arrest warrants would be executed against members of the smuggling gang.
The searches and arrests took place in Berlin-Lichtenberg, Luckenwalde and Dallgow-Döberitz. A gang of ten people in total is accused of commercially smuggling people into Germany. Some of the group are also said to have traded drugs.
The accused are said to have trafficked people on the back of transports via the Balkan route under inhumane conditions. One of the suspected smugglers, a 30-year-old man, was arrested in Lichtenberg. He is said to have primarily worked on the organizational side. In some cases he is said to have driven the vehicles himself. The searches by the federal and state police are still ongoing.
