On Saturday, Germany extradited a 21-year-old to Italy who is said to have killed his ex-girlfriend. A week after his arrest on the A9 near Leipzig, the suspected murderer was taken from Italy to Venice on a military plane and then to a prison.

The death of 22-year-old Giulia has been making headlines in Italy for days. This has led to a fundamental debate about violence against women.

Tens of thousands took to the streets in various Italian cities on Saturday – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls – to protest against so-called femicides. In Rome alone, tens of thousands gathered near the Colosseum. In many places, demonstrators made noise with keychains. Femicide means killing women because of their gender. In many cases, the perpetrators are partners or former partners. There have been dozens of such cases in Italy this year.

The 21-year-old is accused of killing the Italian student two weeks ago after a date. The young woman’s body was only discovered after days of searching in a ravine in the north of the country. After his extradition, the murder suspect was taken to a prison in the northern Italian city of Verona. He is scheduled to go on trial next year.
