According to the authorities, an Austrian police officer fatally hit a colleague with a firearm. The incident happened on Monday at the police station in Trieben, which is about 110 kilometers from Salzburg, according to the Styrian security authority.

The suspect did not resist his arrest. Officials from the neighboring state of Salzburg took up the investigation.

The incident happened during a morning staff meeting. It is too early to say whether the 46-year-old officer shot the 58-year-old colleague on purpose or whether negligence was involved, said a police spokesman for the German Press Agency.

Rescue workers arrived at the station shortly after the shot was fired. However, they were unable to revive the injured officer. A crisis intervention team cared for his family and colleagues.
