According to a study, social relationships, stable finances and an optimistic attitude were the most important factors for successfully overcoming the corona pandemic. According to the expertise of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the emotional support of families and in partnerships was particularly important.

Couple and family relationships generally important

According to this, both couples and parents, even if they were more affected by daycare and school closures, came through the pandemic better on average than others.

“The results make it clear how important stable couple and family relationships are in general and for people’s life satisfaction under stressful conditions in particular,” said Inga Laß, co-author of the study.

Financial situation also crucial

A secure financial situation was also very relevant. For socially disadvantaged people, the already difficult situation has been exacerbated by the pandemic, due to job insecurity and financial worries with regard to wages or further development opportunities.

An optimistic attitude, on the other hand, could serve as a protective factor during the pandemic. 54 percent of those surveyed were also able to take positives from the changed everyday life during the lockdowns. Martin Bujard from the Federal Institute explained: “The ability to recognize good things in critical phases is therefore closely linked to greater life satisfaction.”
