The Ministry of Health of the Generalitat has confirmed in the last hours the first four cases of monkeypox in Catalan territory, all of them from people linked to other cases detected in Spain and about which, for privacy reasons, no more will be given details. The Catalan Ministry of Health already announced just a week ago that “potential suspicious cases” were being investigated.
Specifically, suspicions about these infections were activated on May 17 after a notice from the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) but it has not been until now, due to the complexity of the microbiology and sequencing studies, when it has been confirmed.
At the same time, the Generalitat has directed the Catalan Epidemiological Surveillance Network (XVEC) to issue an alert to the health centers in the territory so that they can notify “as a matter of priority” of possible cases that meet the established criteria.
The regional president himself, Pere Aragonès, predicted a day ago that it was “likely” that cases of this virus would emerge in Catalonia and tried to calm the population by recalling that the Public Health services of the Generalitat are under “constant supervision” and that in addition This disease has a much lower contagion rate than Covid.
