In the second appeal in 2017, Pistorius was finally sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison for murder. Under South African law, prisoners can apply for early release after serving half of their sentence. Pistorius’ proceedings about possible release from prison began a good year ago and also included a meeting between the ex-athlete and his ex-girlfriend’s parents. They opposed his early release.
