Columbia University been gettin’ in some hot water lately, accused of violatin’ federal civil rights law by supposedly bein’ all indifferent towards student-on-student harassment of Jewish students since the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel, according to the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights. This ain’t the first time the Trump administration has gone after big-shot universities. Just the other day, they went and banned Harvard University from lettin’ international students sign up – Harvard was like, “Hold up, that ain’t legal!” The White House spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, said that Harvard had turned into a place full of anti-American, anti-Semitic, pro-terrorist folks.
The government is sayin’ that Columbia broke Title VI, which says that if you get federal money, you can’t be discriminating based on race, color, or national origin – includin’ bein’ mean to folks ’cause they’re Israeli or Jewish. The notice from HHS and the Department of Education lays out a bunch of facts from a 19-month investigation showin’ how Columbia didn’t do right by Jewish students. They didn’t protect ’em, didn’t take complaints seriously, and didn’t even bother to punish vandalism. The government wants Columbia to make some real changes to keep Jewish students safe and happy.
Columbia University is sayin’ they’re workin’ with the government to fix things. They’re all about fightin’ anti-Semitism and any other kind of harassment on campus. They promised to do better and cooperate with HHS and the Department of Education. Back in March, Columbia agreed to do a bunch of stuff the Trump administration wanted after losin’ out on $400 million in grants and contracts. They were accused of not doin’ enough to stop Jewish students from gettin’ harassed. The university’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, said that there ain’t no room for anti-Semitism, harassment, or discrimination at Columbia.
