On the peaks of the Franconian Alb it looks as bleak as in many other low mountain range regions in Germany: Four dry summers in a row and the infestation with bark beetles have caused the once dense spruce stands to die off extensively. But with what to reforest, forest owners and forest administrations ask themselves in view of climate change? With tree species that appear to be more resistant to climate change, such as the Douglas fir? Or leave the dead areas to themselves and hope that drought-resistant vegetation will develop by itself, as is the case in the Bavarian Forest National Park, for example.
