Würzburg Bishop Franz Jung described Christmas as a message of hope, especially in times of war and crisis. At the moment, many contemporaries see more darkness, he said in his video greeting for Christmas. It looks bleak in a world shaped by the war in Ukraine, which is having global repercussions. “And yet, the prophet Isaiah contrasts this terror with his hopeful image of light in darkness.” The people who live in darkness see a bright light, he quoted the prophet Isaiah.

God wants the zeal for justice to kindle in people’s hearts too, said the bishop. “The eagerness to never let the conversation break off, the eagerness to open up negotiation paths again and again, not to exclude the other, but to open up a perspective for him, so that a good cooperation becomes possible.”
