This text comes from the stern archive and was first published in June 2022. We are publishing it here again for Diversity Week 2024.

7 a.m. in the morning, our daughter contacts us via WhatsApp. She’s been spitting up all night and her husband has to leave for work soon. “Could you take Mats to daycare and pick him up again today?” My wife and I split up: she takes the four-year-old to the children’s house in the morning and I pick him up again in the afternoon. Luckily, our daughter and her family live in the house across the street, and although we both work full-time, we have some freedom to take care of grandma and grandpa. In such emergencies we are of course happy to help and we are not alone.
