Not even the proximity of the Champions League final, UEFA’s star competition at club level, tempers the spirits of its president, Aleksander Ceferin, who remains determined to measure himself against Real Madrid on all fronts and with the maximum virulence possible . With that of the European Super League stalled, the head of continental football met the complaints about the permissiveness of the federative body with the accounts of Paris Saint-Germain as a result of the renewal of Kylian Mbappé.
During an interview for the British BBC, Ceferin responded to the complaint that LaLiga plans to present against PSG for not respecting the so-called financial ‘fair play’.
“UEFA has financial fair play rules
which are quite strict. Whoever respects our rules is welcome to play in our competitions; whoever does not respect the rules will not do it, “said Ceferin.
“Neither Real Madrid nor anyone will tell UEFA what to do. They are outraged from one point of view and, as far as I know, their offer was similar to PSG’s offer,” added UEFA’s chief executive, referring to the private offers that both the white and French clubs made to Forward.
From Real Madrid there has not been a single voice against PSG and its economy, but not from LaLiga, which through its president Javier Tebas described the renewal of the French international as “scandalous” and “an insult to football” in in relation to the difficulty of competing against ‘club-states’ that do not respect the margins of fair financial play. PSG is owned by Qatar Sports Investments, a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), Qatar’s state sovereign wealth fund.
“I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again, give me an argument why they shouldn’t own a club,” Ceferin defended himself. “If you say that the clubs belong to the fans, don’t you think that the other English clubs have owners? They have owners from the United States, some from the Middle East, they have owners from England. So it’s exactly the same situation. I am really tired of these baseless accusations,” he added.
“I want to know who broke the rules and if you break the rules, you will be punished,” settled the UEFA president.
