Carnival Cruise Line stated that a painting project was responsible for the odor that affected passengers on cruise ships in Virginia.

Stephen Lehmann, a Petty Officer with the Coast Guard, stated that they received initial reports Wednesday about an odor and people feeling sick on Carnival Magic’s ship. According to him, a crew visited the vessel on Thursday morning. However, no one had to be evacuated to receive medical treatment. The vessel is currently docked in Norfolk.

Carnival stated in a written statement that the odor was caused by an outside painting project on Wednesday. The company stated that the ship’s crew responded quickly and offered assistance to guests.

Carnival did not specify the number of people affected, nor what assistance was provided to passengers. However, they stated that the ship returned to Norfolk on schedule and all passengers had disembarked.
