The Bundestag has lifted the immunity of AfD MP Stephan Protschka. Against the votes of his own parliamentary group, parliament approved the conduct of criminal proceedings against the Bavarian AfD chairman on Thursday evening. The background is probably an ad by Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), who felt offended by Protschka on Ash Wednesday. However, members of the Bundestag may only be prosecuted with the consent of Parliament.
The Bundestag lifted Protschka’s immunity a year ago. In connection with his work as an investment advisor, he was accused of “falsifying evidence-relevant data”. Last March, however, the public prosecutor’s office in Landshut dropped the investigation – there was “insufficient suspicion”.
