The president of the United States, Joe Biden, warned on Monday that the country would respond militarily if China attacks Taiwan and stressed that Beijing “has no jurisdiction” to “take Taiwan by force.”

“We agree on the ‘One China’ policy. We have signed it and all subsequent spin-off agreements, but the idea that (Taiwan) can be taken by force is not appropriate,” he said. “It is the commitment we made,” she added.

Thus, Biden has compared a potential invasion of Taiwan by China with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has warned that it “would dislocate the entire region.” In this sense, he has said that Beijing “is already flirting with danger with such close flybys and all the maneuvers it is carrying out.”

“Russia has to pay a long-term price for its actions. The reason I say this is not only because of Ukraine. If after all that (Russian President Vladimir Putin) has done there is a rapprochement between the Ukrainians and Russia and the sanctions do not continue (…), what signal is sent to China about the cost of trying to take Taiwan for the strength?” he wondered.

Following Biden’s words, a senior White House official has stressed that Washington’s position “has not changed.” “The president has reiterated our ‘One China’ policy and our commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” he said, according to the US television network CNN.

In response, the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, stressed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the country and stressed that Beijing will adopt “firm measures” to “safeguard its sovereignty and security interests”, as stated the China Times media.

“China calls on the US to abide by the ‘One China’ principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués, to honor its commitment not to support Taiwan independence, to be careful with its words and deeds on the issue of Taiwan and that it does not send the wrong signals to the separatist forces that seek independence from Taiwan,” he concluded.
