The SPD had already cleared the way for the alliance on Sunday, albeit with a narrow majority. In a member survey, 54.3 percent voted in favor of the contract. The SPD chairwoman and outgoing governing mayor Franziska Giffey nevertheless spoke of “a clear result, a clear majority”.

The heads of the new government alliance want to sign the coalition agreement on Wednesday. The next day, Wegner is to be elected the new prime minister, replacing Giffey after only a year and a half in office. Giffey is then to become a member of the Senate in the new government. Overall, both parties want to provide five senators on an equal footing.

The Christian Democrats won the February 12 election with a clear majority of 28.2 percent. The SPD ended up in second place with 18.4 percent – just 53 votes ahead of the Greens. The CDU then sounded out with both parties and then decided on coalition negotiations with the SPD. So far, a coalition of SPD, Greens and Left Party has ruled in the capital.
