The Kenyan athletics duo Philimon Kipchumba and Agnes Keino set two course records at the Munich Marathon. Debutant Kipchumba crossed the finish line as the winner in the Olympic Stadium on Sunday after 2:07:28 hours. The 23-year-old was followed by Mengistu Zelalem (Ethiopia) and Berhane Tesfaye (Eritrea), who with times of 2:07:56 and 2:08:10 respectively also remained well below the previous course record. In fourth place, Sebastian Hendel (LG Braunschweig) ran a strong marathon debut with 2:10:37.

Keino won in 2:23:26, also setting a personal best. The 34-year-old won ahead of the 2015 marathon world champion, Mare Dibaba (Ethiopia), who finished in 2:24:12. Third place went to Moroccan Souad Kambouchia in 2:27:35.

For the first time in a good two decades, an international elite field started in Munich. This also led to two old course records being clearly broken: Kenyan Michael Kite ran a time of 2:09:46 in 2000. When the German championships were integrated into the race in 2012, Susanne Hahn (Saarbrücken) won in 2:32:11.

Including the supporting competitions, over 18,000 athletes had registered for the Munich marathon, over 4,000 were marathon runners.
