After a good ten years of activity, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Thuringia is entering the home stretch. The final show will open in Apolda on Thursday (4:00 p.m.). It provides information about projects that have been developed together with partners such as local authorities, associations or parishes to deal with vacant buildings, of which there are thousands in Thuringia due to migration from rural regions. According to the IBA, 30 of the 41 projects started in recent years have now become reality – from the church that has been converted into a hostel to a residential area.
At the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) and Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) are expected. The show is open to the public from Friday (May 5) until October 29 in a factory building that was converted according to plans by the internationally renowned architect Egon Eiermann (1904-1970). The Eiermann building, in which fire extinguishers were produced for decades, is itself an IBA project. After being vacant and renovated, it is to be rented out to creative people as a place of work. The IBA is a company founded in 2012 by the state of Thuringia.
