The woman in front of me at the buffet generously scoops mushrooms onto her plate; one falls to the ground. She picks up the mushroom and tosses it back onto the grill – right in front of the man who cooked it. The woman, an elderly woman with a lot of glitter jewelry, moves on to the steak offer.

At the buffet, people show who they are. Very few are reserved, in dealing with the staff and with the portions. Curry and moussaka? After all, we’re on vacation. All inclusive. Seven days, seven nights.

Package tour, that’s for old people. Anna and I were still convinced of that when we took off. But in this one week we wanted to keep it flat. We may have watched too much “White Lotus”. This series where rich people vacation in expensive hotels in Hawaii and Sicily. Where the spritz tastes even through the screen. We wanted to be in the sun. We wanted to go to the pool. And we didn’t want to have to worry about anything after the booking click.
