Algeria reaffirms its political break with Spain and late this Saturday the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement in which it “deplores and rejects the hasty and unfounded statements made yesterday on behalf of the European Union after the sovereign decision adopted by Algeria to suspend the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborhood and Cooperation that linked it to Spain” and considers them as “a vain attempt to put pressure on a southern country proud of its independence”.
The statement explains that the decision to “suspend” its political relations with Spain “responds to legitimate considerations” since it considers that with its actions the Spanish Government “has disassociated itself from the essential obligations and values enshrined in this Treaty, thus assuming responsibility » of the rupture «for emptying this legal instrument of substance and questioning its relevance in the relations between the two parties».
Algeria claims to have suspended that treaty “to preserve the supreme interests, of a moral and strategic nature, of the country against harmful acts.”
In this second communiqué, Algiers indicates more clearly that “the alleged suspension of trade and investment relations with Spain, provided for in said official European declarations, is hastily invoked without any basis” which, in his opinion, means that Brussels lacks the power to do so. which he considers an “unfortunate intrusion”. They also recall that within the EU “Algeria has the honor of having many reliable and responsible friends and partners”.
