BRUSSELS, 15 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, JosĂ© Manuel Albares, has shown this Sunday “sure” that the United Kingdom will respect the withdrawal agreement from the European Union, amid threats to unilaterally break the Ireland Protocol of the North.

“We have a withdrawal agreement in which we have clearly established the framework in which we have to work,” said the foreign minister before the informal NATO meeting in Berlin, in which the allied ministers prepare the final summit June in Madrid and discuss the accession of Finland and Sweden to the Atlantic Alliance.

In this sense, Albares has said he is “sure” that the United Kingdom “will respect international agreements.” “And this is one”, he has inadvertently settled to assess possible unilateral actions by London, which could cloud relations with Spain when the negotiations to apply Brexit in Gibraltar are in a decisive phase.

The Government assures that the negotiations after Brexit are advancing at a good pace and separating the situation from Gibraltar should not be affected by the tension between London and the EU over Northern Ireland.

London maintains a pulse with Brussels on account of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which was approved after Brexit to avoid a hard border between Ulster and Ireland and which the British Government threatens to abandon unilaterally.
