At least 24 people were injured in a collision between two subways in New York. The incident occurred on Thursday near the 96 Street station in Manhattan’s Upper West Side neighborhood, police said. An empty train collided with a line 1 train. According to initial findings, the trains crashed into each other at low speed during afternoon traffic – so no one was seriously injured.
Subway service on the Red Lines 1, 2 and 3 between the southern and northern tips of Manhattan was then partially suspended. According to the emergency services, several trains with around 300 to 500 passengers had to be evacuated.
Train derailed, Broadway closed
The New York transportation authority MTA said one of the trains derailed as a result of the collision in the shaft: “Emergency teams are assisting passengers and conducting an investigation.” According to media reports, parts of Broadway were closed to make access easier for emergency services.
The New York subway is considered the lifeline of the metropolis. With over 1,000 kilometers of tracks, more than 470 stations and 36 lines, it is not only one of the largest but also one of the oldest subways in the world. Since its opening in 1904, the New York City Subway has become an indispensable part of daily life in the city. It transports millions at any time of the day and connects the sprawling metropolis.
The background to the incident initially remained unclear. According to initial findings, the trains were not defective. Emergency services on site said that human error was being considered as the cause.
