A terrible accident occurred near Hanover on Sunday morning: three young people died when their car was hit by a regional train on a level crossing. As a police spokeswoman said, the victims are the 22-year-old driver from Hanover, a 22-year-old woman from Hildesheim and a 21-year-old from Neustadt. The accident happened in the early hours of the morning near Neustadt am Rübenberge.
The regional train from Hanover towards Himmelreich captured the car “at full speed”, said the spokeswoman. According to the police, there were 38 passengers and 4 railway employees on the train. One person on the train was slightly injured.
The train would be cleared, it said. The police and fire brigade were on site in large numbers in the morning.
According to initial findings, before the fatal collision, the accident car drove onto the Himmelreich level crossing with the barrier closed. Accordingly, it is a half-barrier that does not span the entire width of the street.
The Deutsche Bahn website said that the route between Hanover and Nienburg (Weser) was closed due to an accident at a level crossing – “until noon”.
It also said: “All ICE trains between Oldenburg (Oldb) and Hanover are cancelled. The stops at Oldenburg (Oldb), Delmenhorst and Bremen Hbf are canceled. All IC trains between Hanover and Emden are operated in both directions between Hanover and Leer (East Fri .) are diverted and are delayed by about 30 minutes.”
