Late and maybe too late, SV Meppen started an impressive winning streak in the relegation battle of the 3rd soccer league. After the two successes against Saarbrücken and Wehen Wiesbaden, the Emslanders added a deserved 2-0 (1-0) win against Rot-Weiss Essen on Saturday.

“I think everyone asks themselves: why this turnaround all of a sudden? Why all of a sudden this playfulness, this biliousness? It’s absolute madness,” said center forward Marvin Pourié at MagentaSport.

The only problem for the Meppener is: Three games before the end of the season, the gap to a non-relegation zone is still five points because they are also 16th in the table. Hallescher FC won their home game against Ingolstadt. In addition, the last three opponents of the season could hardly be more difficult: Next Sunday there will be a derby at promotion candidates VfL Osnabrück. Dynamo Dresden on the 37th and SC Freiburg’s second team on the final day are also among the top six in the table.

Against Essen, Marius Kleinsorge (34th) and Pourié (58th) scored a deserved win in front of 10,220 spectators. “At the moment the team can be called a unit,” said coach Ernst Middendorp. “I watched Arminia Bielefeld last night. You could see the pressure. The players have to deal with that. And at the moment we’re doing it.”
