The successful start to the season excited the “Löwen” fans and brought great relief to coach Maurizio Jacobacci. “I’m very happy about the win, especially after the pessimism beforehand,” said the coach after the 2-0 (1-0) win in the 3rd division against SV Waldhof Mannheim.
Jacobacci offered seven newcomers in the starting XI. And the best of them was Manfred Starke. The 32-year-old midfielder was instrumental in scoring both goals in front of 15,000 spectators in the sold-out Grünwalder Stadion on Saturday. First the very unfortunate self-goal by guest goalkeeper Jan-Christoph Bartels (12th minute) and later the wonderful attack that striker Fynn Lakenmacher completed to make it 2-0 (55th).
Before it was 1-0, Starke captured the ball about 30 meters from the Mannheim goal and shot powerfully with his left foot. The ball flew to the crossbar, bounced off Bartels’ back and then into the net. Jacobacci praised Starke’s “fantastic shot”.
For the second 1860 hit, Starke was the starting point. From his own half, he initiated a perfectly played tempo attack via Albion Vrenezi and Julian Guttau, which the substitute Lakenmacher completed. “I’m glad we kept a clean sheet,” summed up Jacobacci, who spoke of a “solid team performance”.
