Nobody could really explain Regensburg’s point win. Was it luck? Or the well-deserved wages, because Jahn, who was clearly considering Magdeburgers, never gave up despite falling behind two times? “Today it was also a question of morality and it simply showed that we are alive, that we always believe in ourselves,” said Regensburg attacking player Kaan Caliskaner after the flattering 2-2 in the 2nd Bundesliga against the promoted team .
Caliskaner equalized in a turbulent final phase on Sunday. “Even if others write us dead, we’re always there until the last minute,” said the 23-year-old about his goal in the 90th minute. It wasn’t enough for a lucky punch, but the point win was more than Jahn actually deserved after another harmless performance.
In the Jahnstadion, Magdeburg took control of the game from the start and played their usual possession football. The FCM proved ball-safe and offensively radiated enthusiasm. Jahn reacted too cautiously and, as so often this season, did not develop any penetrating power offensively. Only Nuremberg and Rostock have scored fewer goals this season.
“We didn’t manage to build up the necessary intensity in our start-up behavior. Our game lacked the right balance,” complained Jahn coach Mersad Selimbegovic.
Only after the break did the home side appear a little more courageously and benefited from a gross misunderstanding by Magdeburg to equalize. “If the opponent doesn’t close the sack in this league, you can always come back. We did it, even if probably nobody in the stadium believed in it anymore,” said Selimbegovic.
Magdeburg missed a liberating blow in the relegation battle due to the late equalizer, but maintained their five-point lead over Regensburg. The Jahn has to tremble in the final sprint of the season. The Upper Palatinate are currently on the relegation place.
