For Lothar Matthäus, HSV striker Robert Glatzel is not a candidate for the German national soccer team. “Nothing against Glatzel. He does a great job and scores reliably. But it’s the 2nd league,” said Matthäus (62) to “Bild” (Thursday). “We don’t have enough very good German center forwards, but we still don’t have to look in the second division.”
Former ZDF sports reporter Béla Réthy recently said that 29-year-old Glatzel was someone for the DFB selection. HSV coach Tim Walter also supported this, “of course, even if he plays in the second division. He scores his goals and his development is constantly improving,” said the Hamburger SV coach on Wednesday. Glatzel has scored four times in the six second division games so far, but not in the last three games. Glatzel has already scored 51 times in a total of 85 league games for HSV so far.
If Julian Nagelsmann, as a possible new national coach, plays with a “real 9”, “then Füllkrug is set for me,” explained record national player Matthäus. The attacker from Borussia Dortmund has proven “that he can score in the national team, he plays in the Champions League. As does Behrens from Union, who I would see as a back-up. And Gnabry as a third,” said the 1990 world champion.
