Lost ground, but showed great fighting spirit. Hamburger SV overcame a 1:3 deficit in a 3:3 (1:2) win at 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Saturday and avoided their third defeat of the season. Robert Glatzel (10th minute, 65th) and Miro Muheim (73rd) scored for HSV, Boris Tomiak (13th), Marlon Ritter (24th) and Terrence Boyd (54th) were successful for Kaiserslautern. In the table, the Hamburg team fell back into the relegation place with 21 points behind Fortuna from Düsseldorf, who had the same number of points, and can still be overtaken by Holstein Kiel on Sunday.
“We didn’t do it smartly. That hurts me inside,” said Hamburg captain Jonas Meffert after the game on Sky. The midfielder was annoyed by too many mistakes in his team’s game. “We have to improve that. That’s a fact,” demanded the 29-year-old and added with a look at the promotion battle: “Otherwise we won’t collect enough points.”
HSV coach Tim Walter had to make three changes to his team. Immanuel Pherai, Ransford Königsdörffer and Moritz Heyer moved into the starting line-up to replace the injured Ignace van der Brempt (torn muscle fiber), Jean-Luc Dompé (adductor problems) and Ludovit Reis (shoulder injury).
Hamburg started the game confidently and dominantly. The reward was the early 1-0 by Glatzel, who coldly converted a cross from Bakery Jatta. However, the deficit was a wake-up call for the hosts. First Tomiak managed to equalize, then Ritter took advantage of a major mistake by Hamburg defender Dennis Hadzikadunic, who was unable to clear a ball, to give the Palatinate team a somewhat surprising, but not undeserved, lead.
The North Germans also started the second half with a lot of momentum, but then ran into a counterattack from the hosts after a Pherai bad pass: Hadzikadunic was unable to decisively disrupt Boyd before he scored to make it 3-1.
But HSV kept faith in themselves. After Glatzel’s connection, the visitors benefited from a serious mistake by FCK keeper Julian Krahl, who completely underestimated Muheim’s long cross.
