The grandmother of the 17-year-old who was killed in a traffic stop in a Paris suburb called on the French population to calm down and called for an end to the violent protests. “Don’t smash windows, don’t attack schools and buses, stop it,” she said on BFMTV. “It’s the moms who ride the bus, it’s the moms who walk around outside,” she added.

After the violent death of her grandson Nahel M. by a police officer, protests broke out in France for the fifth night in a row. More than 700 people were arrested on Sunday night, and hundreds of vehicles and dozens of buildings burned. According to the authorities, however, the extent of the violence was less than the riots of the previous nights.

On Thursday, the mother of the 17-year-old had called for a funeral march. It started peacefully, but then there were riots and fires in several cities in the country.
