Borussia Mönchengladbach scored three points at the start of the 13th match day of the Bundesliga. Coach Daniel Farke’s team beat VfB Stuttgart 3-1 (2-1) on Friday evening in Borussia-Park in front of 53,178 spectators. The sporting crisis in Swabia is getting worse – despite two recent home wins.
Mönchengladbach was better on track from the start. In the fourth minute, the Foals took the lead with a remarkable direct acceptance by Jonas Hofmann, who had returned from injury, following a cross from Alassane Plea. Stuttgart remained harmless in the early stages – the next setback followed in the 25th minute. Marcus Thuram made it 2-0 with a left-footed shot, after which VfB got into the game better and were rewarded in the 35th minute. Tiago Tomas scored the goal after an outstanding dribbling in the penalty area. Stuttgart then increased the pressure, but the home side remained 2-1 at half-time.
In the second half, the game remained entertaining with chances for both sides, but also with a lot of uncertainties and erratic shots. Stuttgart pressed for an equaliser, but were unable to take advantage of their chances. Instead, coach Michael Wimmer’s team had to concede a third goal (90.2) after Patrick Herrmann, who had just been substituted on, counterattacked.
In the match, there was also trouble again about the use of the video referee. After about a quarter of an hour, Gladbach’s Ramy Bensebaini should have been sent off after a slap in the face by Waldemar Anton. Referee Matthias Jöllenbeck pulled out a yellow card and, after watching the scene on the monitor, also stuck to his decision. As a result, there were repeatedly decisions by the referee that were worth discussing.
In the table, VfB remains in 15th place for the time being due to the renewed away defeat, while Borussia temporarily finds itself in 7th place.
