Two 17-year-old skiers from the Berchtesgaden area and from the Upper Palatinate died while skiing in Austria. The two fell over the right edge of the slope on Wednesday in the Steinplatte ski area in the Tyrolean district of Kitzbühel, as the police reported. They then fell about 60 meters down over alpine and meadow terrain that was partly interspersed with stones and barely covered with snow. Despite resuscitation measures, they died at the scene of the accident. According to witnesses, the two young people had been traveling at very high speed on the red runway.
As the Austrian broadcaster ORF reported, the fatalities belonged to two families who were friends who were vacationing together. According to the Austrian news agency APA, a police spokesman warned of the currently particularly high danger of driving too fast: “There is simply very little snow next to the slope.”
