How many people currently live in Germany? And how has the population developed recently? The Federal Statistical Office will provide information on this this Thursday – it will publish its population estimate for the year 2022.
The question of how the number of inhabitants has changed in view of the war refugees from Ukraine should also be interesting.
In the first half of 2022, Germany’s population had risen to over 84 million for the first time, as the experts in Wiesbaden announced in the autumn. The decisive factor was therefore the influx of refugees from Ukraine as a result of the Russian war of aggression. At the same time, there were 161,000 more deaths than births in Germany, which dampened population growth.
population growth of one percent
As of June 30, 2022, 843,000 more people lived in Germany than at the end of 2021, which, according to the Federal Office, corresponded to a population growth of one percent. Since German reunification, there have only been increases of this magnitude in 1992 as a result of the opening of borders in Eastern Europe and the war in Yugoslavia, and in 2015 with the refugee migration at the time.
In the first half of 2022 there was net immigration (immigration minus emigration) of around 750,000 Ukrainians to Germany. Overall, the net immigration was around one million people, as the Federal Statistical Office announced in September based on preliminary results.
