At minus 53 degrees, the lowest temperature ever measured in China was reached in the northern Chinese city of Mohe. As the official Xinhua news agency reported on Monday, the record of minus 52.3 degrees from 1969 was broken on Sunday in the northernmost city of the People’s Republic on the border with Russia. For three days in a row, the temperatures there have already fallen to more than minus 50 degrees.
Extreme cold has hit Heilongjiang Province, causing several areas in the Great Hinggan Mountains to endure the extremely cold temperatures. Snow and ice prevailed in the city of Mohe for eight months of the year, with an annual average temperature around minus three degrees, Xinhua reported.
This continues the trend towards more and more extreme weather phenomena. Last summer, China experienced a historic drought that caused numerous rivers and lakes, including the Yangtze, to fall. As a result, some places in China even experienced power shortages.
In Germany, the lowest temperature ever measured is minus 37.8 degrees, according to the “Tagesschau”. The region of Upper Bavaria recorded this value in 1929. Last year the lowest value was also reached in Bavaria. In mid-December it was 19.3 degrees there.
